RapidKL’s change to zonal fares

As expected, there were a large number of articles and comments in the media about the changeover from the daily pass to the zonal system.

TRANSIT last met with RapidKL and Prasarana on 19 August to discuss the proposed changes.  At that meeting we were informed that RapidKL would start selling the monthly Rapidpass on 20 August and that they had a number of brochures for the new routes to help give people information.

TRANSIT asked for copies of those brochures and we were told that we would get copies by the end of the week … but unfortunately we never received those copies.

So instead, we went and collected the brochures ourselves, scanned some of the routes into the computer, did a little bit of research, and we found some very interesting things.

  • There are numerous inconsistencies in the way that routes are labeled
  • Some routes use KL as the centre with zones 1-5 as concentric rings, radiating out from the centre of KL. Examples include U40, U65, U69 and U81 (among others)
  • Other routes base the zones on the starting point of the route and indicate travel through multiple zones when the bus only travels through one zone. Examples include  Route U43
  • Other routes that only service points outside of the City Centre may indicate travel through 2 zones when there is only travel through 1 zone.  Examples include U623 & U86;
  • Other routes that only service points outside of the City Centre indicate only the zones in which the bus travels, for example U62.

Scanned route information

We have also scanned some of the route information from the brochures provided by RapidKL.

Each of the links below leads to a separate posting for each route.  You can post comments & complaints about the route or download a .jpg image to save for your own needs. We will try to add more routes soon and would appreciate it if you can help by scanning your own brochures and sending the files to klangvalley.transit@gmail.com.

Map of KL Fare zones

TRANSIT is disappointed that RapidKL has not produced a single overall map of the fare zones in the Klang Valley for the information of consumers.  For this reason, we have decided to construct our own map.

TRANSIT has adapted the BasTrenKL map produced by Vector Designs (the best example of Klang Valley public transport as a whole that we have seen) to indicate our approximation of the fare zone boundaries.

Our hope that the above information will be useful for public transport users in the Klang Valley as well as RapidKL customers.  We would appreciate it if you could also scan and share information with us, for the benefit of public transport users.
