KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 — Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) will from Tuesday offer 125 free train tickets daily for one week to mark its 125th anniversary.

A statement said KTMB would also offer 125 tickets at RM1.25 one way for senior citizens above 60 years on the Kuala Lumpur-Ipoh-Kuala Lumpur shuttle service.

Cheaper shuttle train tickets for economy class would be sold at Kuala Lumpur train station from 11am on Tuesday and at Ipoh station from 4pm.

“The pass will cost lower than RM12 and will help save cost and available from noon to 2pm at the special counter, level 1, Sentral Station, Kuala Lumpur,” the statement said.

KTMB said it was on first come first serve basis and only for Malaysian citizens adding senior citizens would have to show personal documents as proof.

TRANSIT Says:

We are very happy to celebrate the 125th anniversary of train service in these lands – and we encourage public transport users to take advantage of these deals and take another memorable train trip.

We only wish that the 125 years anniversary will be marked with great celebration in Malaysia – at the very least, 1 June 2010 should be declared as KTM Day in honour of those 125 years of operations.

We know that KTMB has got problems – no company in existence can claim that they are problem free – but for one day at least, let’s set aside the problems and focus on the history & tradition of KTM.

Perhaps on 2 June 2010, the gloves will come off once again.
