Prasarana deals with neighbours affected by KL Monorail extension project

TRANSIT took note of the following interesting article, which describes Prasarana refusing to pay compensation to the residents of the Tong Weng Mansion in Brickfields, while agreeing to pay compensation to two other site owners in the area.

The compensation requests are in relation to the KL Monorail expansion project, which will extend the KL Monorail from the Tun Sambanthan station down to MidValley and to Old Klang Road on the other side of the Federal Highway.

Interestingly enough, all three compensation requests are in relation to properties that are illegally occupying government land – a situation that seems to occur more frequently than one might expect.

SYARIKAT Prasarana Negara Berhad (Prasarana) has rejected an appeal for compensation from residents of Tong Weng Mansion in Brickfields.

The residents had appealed for compensation after a badminton court was fenced off for a monorail extension project.

The residents also used the badminton court, which was on government land, as an area for activities such as gatherings and funeral services.

Residents’ association chairman G.S. Maniam said Prasarana had only paid compensation to two temples that had also illegally occupied government land.

“We know it is not our land but we would like some compensation as the money could be used to build a wall between the project site and the mansion,’’ said Maniam.

Work on underground section of Jakarta Metro begins

TRANSIT took note that construction of the Jakarta Metro began on April 4th.

The Jakarta Metro network will eventually have 2 lines (North-south and East-West) essentially following the path first blazed by the Transjakarta bus service nearly a decade ago.

Project manager Mass Rapid Transit Jakarta announced that work started on the underground section of Jakarta’s first metro line on April 4.

Excavation began at Hotel Indonesia Traffic Circle, where there will be an underground station. A guide wall is due to be completed within three months, which will allow a diaphragm wall to be built. The timescale for the completion of this and subsequent station works is four years.

In May the city authorities announced the winners of the tenders for the three underground civil works packages. Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Company and PT Hutama Karya is undertaking the work at Hotel Indonesia Traffic Circle, whereas the other two packages are being carried out by a consortium of Shimizu, Obayashi, Wijaya Karya and Jaya Konstruksi.

Two of the three elevated civil works packages will be carried out by a Tokyu-WIKA consortium, with a consortium of Obayashi, Shimizu and Jaya Konstruksi responsible for the other.

Revenue operations on the 15·7 km line are planned to start in early 2018. An 8·1 km northern extension is planned as the second phase.

Passengers flee as ceiling gives way (The Star)

MALACCA: Fifteen passengers ran helter-skelter when a portion of the ceiling of the Alor Gajah Sentral terminal collapsed after a downpour and strong wind.

It is learnt that the entire ground floor area was flooded during the incident which occurred near the ticket counters at about 12.30am yesterday.

Security guard Sabirah Dihat, 48, said it was fortunate that the collapse did not occur near the waiting area for passengers.

“The wind was strong and it was raining heavily when I heard a crashing sound.

“I rushed out and saw that the ceiling had collapsed and the floor was wet,” she said here yesterday, adding that the passengers then rushed out of the building.

Meanwhile, Alor Gajah Municipal (MPAG) councillor Shadan Othman said the heavy rain might have caused the ceiling to collapse.

“Our initial investigations discovered that some water pipes above the ceiling were clogged with the corpses of pigeons,” he said.

A thorough investigation would be conducted to find out exactly how and why a portion of the ceiling gave way, Shadan said.

The council, he noted, had cordoned off the building and the public could buy tickets from special counters set up outside.

Built at a cost of RM3.3mil, the terminal, known as AG Sentral, was completed in June last year.


We were obviously surprised to read of this news, but glad that people were not injured. We look forward to the results of the investigation.

MRT Update: Ho Chin Soon research statement speculates on route of MRT Circle Line

We are not endorsing Ho Chin Soon’s anticipated route for the MRT. We just wonder how feasible it is compared to the Gamuda MRT proposal, but then both lines have their advantages and challenges.

Kuching Sentral to open in March, 2012

TRANSIT took note of interesting information about the opening of Kuching Sentral, a bus terminal located at 6th mile, Jalan Penrissen, a short distance from Kuching Airport and the old Sarawak Government Railway Corridor. The terminal was supposed to open in December 2010 but the projected open date is now March 2012.

Melaka monorail downtime is not a joke

TRANSIT took note of a few interesting articles from down in Malacca, where the Chief Minister appears to be making light of the embarrassing situation with the troublesome monorail.

TRANSIT is disappointed that the CM is not taking the problems of the monorail seriously. His suggestions that tourists are interested in coming to Malacca to see the broken down monorail are insulting and show a lack of respect for taxpayer money, which has been invested into this project.

At the same time, (or should we say, to make things worse) the CM is talking about expanding the monorail to provide service along Jalan Tun Ali in the backside area of Jalan Hang Tuah, the attempted new town centre / institutional zone for the city.

MALACCA: Despite the endless glitches that has struck the Malacca Tourist Monorail, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said there is a bright side to the issue.

“I know many quarters have criticised the monorail service due to the glitches but we are optimistic it will gain popularity once the flaws have been rectified.

“It has gained fame thanks to the media reports about the earlier problems,” he said, when officiating at the ground-breaking of the second phase of the service at Jalan Tun Mutahir here yesterday.

[TRANSIT: It has been said that there is no such thing as bad publicity … but that’s not quite true.]

Mohd Ali said the service had malfunctioned 27 times since its launch in October last year.

Brickfields contra-flow bus & taxi lane to begin operation this weekend, from 3 December 2011

TRANSIT took note of this article that states that the Brickfields contra-flow bus & taxi lane will be introduced this weekend.

The southbound lane, which had been under construction since earlier this year, was supposed to open in August, but protests from area business owners led to the implementation being pushed back to after Deepavali.

LRT-LRT ticketing integration begins today, 28 November 2011 (Update #1)

Update: This article from the NST describes a smooth transition to the new integrated ticketing system!

TRANSIT took note of the news that LRT – LRT ticketing integration will begin on 28 November 2011.

Of course, the LRT-LRT ticketing integration is not really that big a deal. And unfortunately, customers will not benefit from a reduction in the fares, which still reflect the old system where the STAR & PUTRA line were operated by separate companies and transferring from one LRT to the other required the passenger to pay a new “starting fare” because they were making a “new” trip.

In case you are wondering, the starting fares are:

Kelana Jaya Line – RM0.70 or RM1.00 (for the underground sections)
Ampang/Sri Petaling Line – RM0.70, RM1.00 and RM1.20.
KL Monorail – RM1.20
KTM Komuter – RM1.00

A person transferring between the Ampang Line and Kelana Jaya line making only a 2-station journey (say, from Psara Seni to Bandaraya via Masjid Jamek) would pay RM2.20 for their fare. RM2.10 would take you from Kelana Jaya to KL Sentral & Pasar Seni, and RM2.30 from Kelana Jaya to Masjid Jamek!

Is that a fair fare?

What fare integration does involve is the construction of a newly designed station arcade at Masjid Jamek as well as the launch of new Ticket Vending Machines that will allow the integration of LRT-LRT fares.

Now, let us have a “TRANSIT moment”, where we look at a significant improvement to public transport and still find a way to complain.

Oh, wait, we already did complain about starting fares above. So let’s “complain” again, by pointing out the fact that the integration of LRT fares has taken more than 7 years to complete. In contrast, when the government of Hong Kong forced the merger of the MTR & KCR railway systems, under the MTR Banner, fare integration was complete in 7 months!

We know public transport is moving forward – we just want to move forward faster, and further and further away from the “bad old days” of the past (like, 2004-2010)

Now you know why we will always have traffic congestion in KL – because we widen roads to allow cars to block them!

TRANSIT took note of this absurd piece of news where the KL government will be spending lots of your RM to widen Jalan Ma’rof in Bangsar, in the area between Jalan Bangsar (where the flyover to/from MidValley is) and Jalan Ara (where the Masjid is).

Why is the government widening only this section of the road? Because this is the area where there is a great deal of congestion caused by taxis that queue up to fill-up with Natural Gas at the Petronas station between Jalan Riong & Jalan Tempinis.

The Petronas station in Bangsar is the only NGV facility in the south side of KL, and the daily queues are a source of frustration for residents, neighbours and taxi drivers alike.

But instead of solving the problem by having Petronas build more NGV filling stations – or even a centralized multi-level filling station in the nearby Tenaga Nasional lands, the DBKL government has decided to widen the road so taxis can queue up.
